CGORS is a proud collaborator on The Red-tailed Hawk Project, led by Bryce Robinson of Cornell University. This collaboration includes many researchers and organizations, and covers a large geographic range, investigating many aspects of the ecology and evolution of the Red-tailed Hawk. Please see https://redtailedhawkproject.org/ for more details, or follow them on Facebook.
CGORS assists this project by trapping, banding, taking morphological measurements, photographing and deploying transmitters on Red-tailed Hawks older than two years of age during fall migration. Blood samples are also taken for the study’s genomic dataset. Additional individuals are fitted with color-bands in hopes that re-sightings will reveal breeding locations and migration paths.
The map below shows the paths of three of the birds fitted with transmitters. This work is only possible thanks to generous donations made specifically for this purpose. Thank you to our donors!
If you would like to make a donation towards a transmitter, please contact Danny Erickson
