Mission and Goals

MISSION:

Contribute to raptor research in order to advance conservation, with the primary emphasis on migration monitoring and banding in southeastern Wisconsin..

GOALS:

1. Continue the storied legacy of the Cedar Grove Ornithological Research Station by annually collecting data through observations and bird banding to provide insight into raptor population trends and patterns of occurrence, as well as species-related age and sex ratios. Implement best practices as defined by the USGS Bird Banding Laboratory Code of Ethics and submit data annually to the USGS for further understanding of population status, dynamics, and ecology.

2. Train the next generation of raptor researchers by offering fall internships to young professionals in ornithological and related fields.

3. Collaborate with other organizations and researchers to further advance current raptor research.

4. Maintain land for observation and trapping by cooperatively working with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to enhance habitat through native plantings and invasive removals, promoting a quality stop-over site for birds migrating along the Western Lake Michigan Flyway.

5. Disseminate information to the public through HawkCount.org, social media posts, scientific journals, magazine and local newspaper articles, and directly to the public through organized field trips.
